The Lord my Strength

This piece is from a series in 2020.  I lettered a piece every week, focusing on the names of God.

The first week’s prompt was Psalm 43:2 “The Lord my strength.” - I didn’t realise when I chose it that this psalm is DARK. David is pretty depressed at this point in his life.

Handlettered drawing in vintage style reads "The Lord my strength" with text underneath in a font reading ""

Psalm 43

Vindicate me, my God,
and plead my cause
against an unfaithful nation.
Rescue me from those who are
deceitful and wicked.
You are God my stronghold.
Why have you rejected me?
Why must I go about mourning,
oppressed by the enemy?
Send me your light and your faithful care,
let them lead me;
let them bring me to your holy mountain,
to the place where you dwell.
Then I will go to the altar of God,
to God, my joy and my delight.
I will praise you with the lyre,
O God, my God.

Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
my Saviour and my God.

Close up of the artist's hand holding a black pen over black and white artwork. The artwork is too close to see the words, but the floral and wood grain details are visible

Considering the year many of us have had, it's the perfect psalm to meditate on, to remember that in the midst of life’s challenges, God is always there.

This reminder is for you too -
You don’t have to do this alone.
